Our Colors

A fortuitous and dreamlike encounter with an older, bearded man by the shore sets the stage for an unexpected friendship. Mr. Amamiya, the proprietor of a quaint café housed in a weathered building nearby, reveals to Sora that he is gay. Sora feels an instant connection and recognizes Mr. Amamiya as a much-needed ally in whom he can confide. Though the older man harbors no romantic intentions towards the teenager, he offers a wealth of life experiences to share. This newfound bond emboldens Sora to come out, first to his newfound friend and then to Nao, his closest companion. Mr. Amamiya extends a heartfelt invitation to Sora and Nao to paint a mural in his café, an exciting project that fills the young man with anticipation.

However, Sora’s mother begins to take notice of the increasing time Sora and Nao spend together and jumps to the wrong conclusion: they must be dating! Meanwhile, school life becomes equally challenging, especially when one of Nao’s friends confesses her interest in Sora, leaving him unsure of how to navigate the situation. However, it is the arrival of a smartly dressed older woman at the café that unravels unexpected revelations and prompts Nao and Sora to confront the complexities of adult life and relationships. Amidst these uncertainties, they question whether they can truly trust Mr. Amamiya.

Gengoroh Tagame, an acclaimed mangaka, established his reputation in the 1990s as an openly gay artist creating gay erotic manga for mature audiences. However, in recent years, Tagame has expanded his repertoire to include works intended for a broader readership. Notably, with titles like “My Brother’s Husband” and now “Our Colors,” Tagame endeavors to captivate a much wider audience with his storytelling prowess.
