Receiving Transmissions

Receiving Transmissions

I find “Receiving Transmissions” captivating because it seamlessly blends the supernatural and extraordinary with the daily struggles of life. The story is not just a metaphor for daily struggles through sci-fi, but rather it intertwines both spheres in a unique way. The connection between Scotty’s childhood and her current life is beautifully portrayed, with her favorite childhood show shaping and defining her character. The faith in things irrational or out of our control that we all put our trust in is materialized in the story, making it even more relatable.

The artwork is mostly slice-of-life and cute, with a cartoonish style that reflects the different moods and mental health moments of the characters. The attention to detail in the spaces, visual narrative, and visual signing is incredible and always supports the mood of the story. The cover art, while experimenting with negative space and ink, doesn’t fully tease all that the story has to offer.

Overall, “Receiving Transmissions” is a beautifully crafted story that blends the supernatural and the daily struggles of life in a relatable and unique way.
