Heart Eyes #2

Heart Eyes #2

It has been a while since I last read something from Dennis Hopeless, but I have enjoyed his work in the past. The first issue of this series immediately grabbed my attention. What stands out in this book is its deliberate pacing. Rather than rushing through the narrative, it skillfully captures the end-of-the-world atmosphere, creating a sense of stillness and decay, complemented by occasional bursts of action. Victor Ibanez’s artwork shines in depicting both the creatures and the monstrous side of humanity. The book’s attention to detail, particularly in showcasing the decaying world, adds to its immersive quality, enhanced by Addison Duke’s color design.

In this issue, we witness the consequences of Lupe’s interactions with the monsters she encountered outside. This prompts Rico to plunge into a panic-driven attempt to save her. Fueled by his determination to rescue Lupe, he finds her amidst the monsters, which overwhelms his mind. Lupe, however, tries to ease his fear, assuring him that everything will be alright. But Rico is unable to find solace in her words. It becomes evident that Lupe possesses a unique quality that protects her, as Rico’s panic is a natural response. He flees, and the monsters immediately pursue and tear him apart, leaving Lupe devastated.

This leads us into a glimpse of Lupe’s past and the origins of the monsters. Her backstory is one of abuse and loss, as she and her mother live and work for a bookstore owner. Following her mother’s death, Lupe and the twisted owner become connected through a book of magic. They become entwined in a cult’s attempt to open a gateway between dimensions. However, things do not unfold as expected, and Lupe’s empathy for the world prevents them from controlling her completely. Recognizing her as a valuable conduit, they exploit her while she manages the bookstore, witnessing her “uncle” gradually succumb to their influence. Unfortunately, her encounter with a group of teenagers takes a disastrous turn, further complicating her already dire situation. While the issue does not provide a definitive explanation for the world’s end, it lays the foundation for future events.
