Dark Ark

Dark Ark

We are all familiar with the classic tale of Noah’s ark, where he saves two of every animal to survive the great flood. But what if there was another individual who had a similar idea to Noah’s? What if, instead of rescuing the creatures of the natural world, this person sought to save the monsters of the supernatural realm? In this dark reimagining of the Noah’s ark story, Cullen Bunn showcases his talent for resurrecting old tales and shedding new light on them. Without a doubt, this is his best work yet.

Dark Ark unfolds within the same universe as Noah’s ark but follows the sorcerer Shrae. Just as Noah is tasked by God to save Earth’s animals, Shrae has been commanded by the devil to rescue the beasts of Hell. However, when Shrae’s minions catch sight of Noah’s ark, dissent begins to stir among the ranks. Some monsters are eager to attack, while others are hesitant. Can Shrae keep the fiends of the dark ark under control, or will he become their next meal?

Once again, Cullen Bunn delivers an exceptional addition to his repertoire. His storytelling prowess is so remarkable that he seems like a muse of creativity. I am enamored by his work, his writing style, and Dark Ark as a whole. While this issue primarily focuses on setting up the plot, it is compelling enough to leave me yearning for more. Dark Ark presents a captivating twist on the Noah’s ark legend, and I am surprised that no one else has explored this concept before. The idea of another ark is simply fascinating.

The characterization in Dark Ark is superb, and the series offers a plethora of intriguing subplots. Each character possesses their own distinct personality, simultaneously terrifying and lovable. One character that particularly captivates me is the manticore Kruul. I am eager to witness the development of his subplot. Additionally, I am intrigued by the conflicts between the vampires and the naga, as well as the story involving the chained human sacrifices.

As you can see, Dark Ark boasts a rich and engaging storyline. However, that is not all—the artwork is also fantastic. In fact, it was Juan Doe’s sinister cover that initially caught my attention and compelled me to review this issue. The moment I laid eyes on the eerie, serpent-like ship emerging from the crimson fog, I knew I had to take a closer look. When I discovered that Cullen Bunn was the writer, it was the cherry on top. If you appreciate exceptional artwork and superb writing, be sure to pick up a copy of Dark Ark.
